I love the Andromeda Strain.
It is about how the boy survives on a lifeboat with a Bengal Tiger, Hyena, Orangutan, and a wounded Zebra.

EDIT: I agree with Linux. He is just relating his traumatic experience with what he knows best: animals.

That is part of the book. The boys actually name is Piscine, but he shortens it to Pi.

then you'll be backing up my statement of Michael Crichton who can be considered the most successful author in history, being the only one to ever have the #1 film, TV show, and book simultaneously, in addition to having numerous other successful books and films, and even producing a work from beyond the grave (a complete manuscript of Pirate Latitudes was found on his hard drive after his death in 2008 from throat cancer).
